Chapter Nineteen

The roof garden was beautiful. The night air had enough of a chill to help Ollie clear the emotional residue of his magical overload from his brain, and as he picked at the food Cain had zapped up for him, he looked out across the lights of night sky Manhattan. He rarely used to go out at night when he lived in the forest, and once he moved to town, it seemed easier to be home after dark as some people seemed to go crazy without daylight.

That had changed when he’d been following Cain, but even then Ollie had always made sure he was snug in a tree somewhere, with his glamor firmly employed so no one could see him. Sitting out under the night sky, watching the lights twinkle, gave the scene a dreamlike quality if he discounted the noise of the people in the streets below.

It’d been a rough day, two days, whatever… Ollie never had been good at keeping track of time or days of the week. It wasn’t as though he ever had to be anywhere on a specific day, and since being with Cain, the days didn’t seem to be important, so long as he was with his hound.

And so, to thank Cain for the lovely dinner and the fact he had been so supportive through more shit than Ollie ever believed he’d go through in his lifetime, Ollie dug deep, looking for something positive to focus on. Blue and Beau’s baby seemed to be the obvious choice, which got Ollie thinking how the heck the pregnancy happened in the first place.

“Cain,” he said slowly, watching the bigger man chew his steak. “You know how in nature it always seems to be females that get pregnant and give birth… how did Blue do it? Like, how did he get pregnant and manage to give birth? Is it because he’s a shifter? I mean, I don’t know much about anatomy or anything like that, but I’m fairly sure all the openings I’ve got are used for other things, and I thought babies came from a special place after a couple bumped bottoms with each other.”

“Bumped bottoms?” Cain almost choked on his steak as he laughed. “I love that name for sex, I really do. Bumping bottoms. Yes – and that does apply for men who have sex with other men, too.”

“But I’ve never seen a pregnant man until I met Blue. I thought it was just ladies who could do that.”

“Generally, you’re right.” Cain abandoned his plate, pushing it to the side. “Did anyone talk to you about sex and having children at all when you were growing up?”

Ollie shook his head. He really appreciated how Cain didn’t mention his mom. He wasn’t ready to talk about her just yet. “I saw animals doing their bumping business when I was in the forest, but that was always males with females.” Lowering his voice, he whispered, “Is it that men have always been able to give
